Davies, The Pirc Defence (fritztrainer opening - ChessBase)

!

Nigel Davies

English, Pentium -PC , 64 MB RAM, Windows Vista, XP, DVD drive , soundcard

The Pirc Defence is a highly flexible and double-edged opening with which Black can avoid premature simpli. cation and go for the full point. By first developing his kingside he waits to see how White will deploy his own forces before striking back in the most effective way. The top exponents of the Pirc include Mikhail Gurevich, Alexander Chernin, Jan Timman, Yasser Seirawan, Jonathan Speelman, Zurab Azmaiparpashvili and Alexander Belyavsky; in the past it was a great favourite of Mikhail Botvinnik and Tony Miles. Here Nigel Davies explains the ideas and backs this up by showing exactly how Black should react to White‘s different formations.

Davies has been a Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. He has had a lot of experience with the Pirc having played it extensively throughout his career.

Kasimdzhanov, A World Champion's Guide to the Petroff - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!
Rustam Kasimdzhanov

English, Pentium-Processor at 300 Mhz or higher, 64 MB RAM, Windows XP, Windows Vista, DVD drive

The great popularity of the Petroff Defence at the highest level has attracted general attention lately. Many strong players employ this opening with great success and with both colours. Unfortunately the opinion of the Petroff Defence as a sterile drawish opening seems to be firmly implanted in many minds. The author tries to dispel these myths and presents his understanding of the matter. He examines the most popular lines and provides a large number of ideas that will enable you to play Petroff successfully, with either colour.

Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Born in 1979, the grandmaster from Uzbekistan has for many years been known as a very strong and imaginative player. However in 2004 Rustam Kasimdzhanov (pronounced "Kah-zeem-jha-nov") shocked the chess world by winning the FIDE world chess championship title, beating a string of world-class players like Ivanchuk, Grischuk, Topalov and Adams in the process. Kasimdzhanov is a very deep player, who is able to explain chess ideas in an eloquent, lucid style, with a fine touch of humour. His lessons are both entertaining and instructive - perfect for students who seek to avoid "dry" theory.

With this DVD on the Russian Defence (Petroff Defence) Alexei Shirov continues the successful and highly praised series of his best games. Since many players look on the Russian Defence with the suspicion that it is a drawish opening, and one which at the same time is both dry and boring, Shirov has in this DVD set himself the specific task of countering this view of matters. Thus he begins the DVD with a game featuring the Cochrane Gambit. Then of course Shirov concentrates on the solid and recognised lines, and in doing so continually manages to explain their deeper content. But the spectator will draw benefi t not only from his remarks on the opening, because Shirov understands so brilliantly how to explain instructively and profi tably for the student every phase of the game, with the result that at the end of the DVD on the Russian Defence, you will even have learned a lot about endgames. Alexej Shirov was born in Riga just like world champion Mihail Tal, and also his playing style reminds many chess fans of the young Tal. In the beginning of the 90ies, a comet-like rise brought the young Latvian to the world top within the shortest of time. Being no older than 22 years, he already had an Elo rating of nearly 2750 and belonged to the absolute elite. Since then Shirov has been one of the best players in the world, delighting all chess fans with original and amazing ideas on the board. (Text ChessBase)

The Scotch Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4) is a lively alternative to the Ruy Lopez which has found favour amongst many leading Grandmasters. The top experts in the Scotch include former World Champion Garry Kasparov as well as Alexander Morozevich, Sergei Rublevsky and others. The space White takes early in the game can easily translate into a powerful attack

against Black’s king. In addition to this White can often usually some damage on Black’s pawn structure by capturing Black’s knight on c6. These dual aims have certainly been giving Black plenty to think about. On this DVD Nigel Davies introduces the viewer to the Scotch and first shows an easy way to get on board this opening via the Scotch Four Knights (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.d4). He then goes on to show how this can be built into a World class Scotch repertoire in which Black has more options but also comes under more pressure.

Whilst the presentation is focussed mainly on those who wish to play White, Davies also suggests lines for Black. This makes it essential viewing for players wishing to play either colour.

Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. He has had considerable experience in both the Scotch and in teaching club level players.

ENGLISCHE SPRACHAUSGABE!

Viktor Bologan: Beating the Sicilian Vol. 3:

A Grandmaster’s repertoire

In the third volume of the Open Sicilian we will deal with Black’s second move 2....e6 which he usually adopts when striving for a complex game full of subtleties in order to outplay White, especially when his opponent is lower rated. But the reverse of the medal is that Black assumes quite high risks, and with strict reactions White can pose him serious problems. Of course the DVD is mainly dedicated to all kinds of Paulsen lines with 4… a6 and 4… Nc6, where against most of the main variations I advise the same setup we use against Najdorf and Dragon with Be3, f3 and Qd2, usually followed by long castle. Despite the many games being played every day, Black is still far from safe equality here. Apart from some side lines like 5…Bb4, quite important is to learn how to play the classical Keres Attack. After 6.g4, my recommendation, only the variation with 6…e5 still poses White unpleasant questions - to which of course I have tried to come up with some answers... With the final word on the Sicilian trilogy, I would encourage the viewer to play the Open Sicilian and to have the DVDs as partners, consultants and if lucky a friend in both critical and good situations.

EVA MOSER

deutschsprachigen Raum. (Text ChessBase)

Tiviakov, Sicilian Defense with 2. c3 - Alapin Variation - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

Sergei Tiviakov

English, Pentium-Processor at 300 Mhz or higher, 64 MB RAM, Windows XP, Windows Vista, DVD drive, mouse, soundcard.

I started playing the line 1.e4 c5 2.c3 in the Sicilian Defense as White in 1988. Since then I have employed it in more than 100 games, achieving a high performance score. My personal peak were the years 2005 - 2006, when I managed to win twelve 2.c3-games in a row. Yet I also know the other side of the coin - countless times I had to face this opening with Black when the opponents wanted to avoid my Dragon, for example during the World Candidates Match against Adams in New York in 1994. White tries to occupy the centre with a second pawn, and Black must know his stuff very well in order to be able to equalize. And this is only possible with 2...Nf6 - all other lines give the . rst player a small edge everywhere. Especially against stronger opponents, 2.c3 is an excellent weapon. If White doesn‘t risk anything, he cannot lose! Controlling the game, he can always make a draw from a position of strength. In contrast, playing for a win with Black is always connected with a extremely high risk, and we have seen many games when much higher rated players were completely smashed by White. In comparison with the main lines of the Sicilian, there is much less theory to study - and yet a lot of room for improvement for both sides.

Sergei Tiviakov

Born in Krasnodar (Soviet Union), Sergei Tiviakov was a member of the Smyslov school and gained the titles of World Youth Champion at U16 and U18 levels. 1994 he represented Russia in the Chess Olympiads. Since 1997 Tiviakov has been living in Groningen (Netherlands). With his new home country he won the title in the European Teams Championships in both 2001 and 2005 and was victorious in the championship of the Netherlands in 2006 and 2007. (Text ChessBase)

Davies, The f4-Sicilian - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

Nigel Davies

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Video running time: 4 hours

The f4 Sicilian is a perennial favorite with club players. It was popularised by Bent Larsen in the 1960s and then later on by British GMs such as Mark Hebden, James Plaskett and William Watson. White’s strategy is simple, the advance of his e- and f-pawns gains space on the kingside and might later be used as a battering ram behind which White’s pieces are ready to spring into the attack. Although this plan may sound primitive it can be highly effective. Indeed the Israeli GM Emil Sutovsky has used it to wreak havoc against some of the World’s top players.

On this DVD Davies makes a cogent argument for White playing 2.Nc3 rather than 2.f4 because of the gambit line with 2...d5! 3.exd5 Nf6. He goes on to show that this is not only a playable approach for White but can have devastating consequences against anything but the most accurate play by Black. Accordingly Davies’s presentation is offered for both players wishing to play this opening with White and for those who need to know how to meet it with Black. A special warning is offered to Najdorf players because 2.Nc3 d6 makes 3.f4 very dangerous. (Text ChessBase)

Davies, The closed sicilian - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

Nigel Davies

Video running time: 4.5 hours

·         Language: English

For players who lack either the time or inclination to study reams of opening theory the Closed Sicilian (1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 followed by 3.g3) is an excellent choice. The two great exponents of this method of play were World Champions Vassily Smyslov and Boris Spassky. These days it’s the top English Grandmasters Michael Adams and Nigel Short who are its leading exponents.

During the early stages White quietly builds sp,e strong central fortifications and gains space on the kingside. Despite the quiet appearance of this plan, in the middle game this can lead to a ferocious onslaught against Black’s king. On this DVD Nigel Davies introduces the viewer to the different strategies and variations through a series of instructive games. His presentation caters mainly for players who wish to play White, but he also points out the best methods of defence for Black. This makes it essential viewing for players wishing to play either colour.

Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. He has had considerable experience in both the Scotch and in teaching club level players.
